Guess this is the last year for the state cabins. I hope the private cabins will also go, as they really are based on greed. They lease the rights to be there from the state, for a very small fee, and charge a fortune to rent to visitors. Septic tanks leak into the ocean and all the private cabins that were damaged by erosion, never even cleaned the tanks they left behind. What a filthy mess! I hope the lease program ends when their leases expire. We love this beach and just hate to see the greedy private section. The state cabins were ok, as they were reasonable in the fees to rent, and the money went to the state parks, not to a few greedy folks. We do feel a loss for the state cabins, but for the private ones, well.. mother nature knows best!
I was introduced to HI by a family member. Such a magnificent place to go. If you want to go and relax and enjoy some time in the sun, go to HI! Love the fact that there was not a crowd of people on the beach, the five days that my family and I were there. We stayed in one of the cabins. It was wonderful to sit on the screened in porch at night and just have the breeze blowing in, the sound of the water and the beautiful moon reflecting off the water. Getting up in the mornings to have the deer standing outside the cabin or see that the raccoons had made a visit during the night, that is what nature is all about. If I was not so into living in Kentucky I would so move to this extraordinary island! I am hoping that we get to go back again this year, but what I am hearing we will not be able to go back due to the cabin in which we stayed in will not be accessible due to erosion and the road to get back to the cabin. I did not care that we did not do lot of sight seeing. I was happy at the cabin or sitting on the beach and enjoying my time in the peace and quiet of such a beautiful place and working on my tan. We also did some buggie boarding, that was somke fun!! Those that live there through out the year should seemed blessed to be in such a beautiful place. I love Low Country!
we go every year and rent a cabin...we hate the erosion but it doesen't stop us...best place up and down the eastern seaboard...
Just visited Hunting Island December 28-30th. I camped in a tent and it was excellent. I camped in site 73 and had easy access to the beach and bathhouse. I built a fire and took some hikes. The campground is like others in the state with fire ring, water and elec. The racoons were busy at night but not a real problem. The beach was very nice and not crowded at all. It was 30 degree's which thins out some. I climbed the lighthouse which was great. Check the out building for some history of the families of the lighthouse keepers. I went to a restaurant about 2 miles on the right after leaving the park which had great raw oysters and the fish was good as well.
The trails were peaciful with Palms, old very large pines, and ferns. Very peaciful forest. I have been to Huntington and Edisto and have to say that Hunting is the best for camping close to the beach. Edisto is nice but I prefer Hunting Island. Huntington outside of Mrytle beach has the best beach but does not have the trails that Hunting has plus you camp away from the ocean. Check out the Lagoon in the park with the lighthouse where the Vietnam scences from Forrest Gump was filmed. Fripp island and on the Marsh boardwalk area in Hunting Island were also used in that film. Great trip and very scenic. Can't wait to go back

Our family spent a week there in Sept .We stayed in the cabins. We had a great time. It is surely the most beautiful area that we have vacationed. I would recomend this place to everyone.
