Historic Beaufort is only 16 miles from Hunting Island. Here you will find a town rich in history, with antebellum homes as old as the USA, charming people, large oaks and an atmosphere full of life and fun. Tours can be taken in horse drawn carriages or by foot.
Town of Beaufort
Cross the old swing bridge to enter Beaufort from Hunting Island. Here you will find the largest historic district in the country. Although much of the south was destroyed during the Civil War, Beaufort was spared because of its vital location and was used as a medical center & headquarters for the union campaign.
Today, Beaufort boasts many art galleries and unique shopping experiences as well as a waterfront park and food establishments. Parris Island, the famous Maine Corps recruit depot and the the Marine Corps MCAS air station are located in the Beaufort area.
Features a historic district, fine food restaurants, shopping and more. There is a park called the Sands, which features a boardwalk and tower that gives a great view of the marsh and river waterway.
Lady's Island & Frogmore
Lady's Island & Frogmore offer shopping and restaurants. Fort Fremont, an old fort and the Penn Center, famous for the black gulla history, are both located in the Frogmore area.
